Fairfax County Making Strides Towards Affordable Housing Goal

Fairfax County is making significant strides toward its ambitious goal of creating 10,000 affordable housing units by 2034. As of November 2024, the county has achieved approximately 35% of this target, with a decade remaining to fulfill the commitment.
Since 2020, Fairfax County has produced 1,149 new affordable housing units across various regions, ensuring that affordable housing is accessible throughout the county. Additionally, over 1,400 units are currently under construction, about 1,000 units are in the predevelopment pipeline, and more than 600 units are in the conceptual phase.
A notable development is One University, a nearly 11-acre property near George Mason University. This project has been redeveloped to feature 240 affordable housing units for families and seniors, available to those earning up to 60% of the area median income.
The county's commitment to affordable housing was further solidified in March 2022 when the Board of Supervisors doubled the initial production goal from 5,000 to 10,000 units by 2034. This decision was driven by early successes and a robust project pipeline, reflecting the county's dedication to addressing housing affordability.
Fairfax County continues to advance its affordable housing initiatives through public-private partnerships, innovative financing, and the strategic use of public land. These efforts are crucial in meeting the housing needs of its residents and ensuring equitable access to affordable housing across all communities.
